Abstract
IBS Journal of Science is publishing the proceedings of a national meeting on Astronomy and Astrophysics held in Algeria in May 2009. The Algerian Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics was a two day meeting where almost all those involved in the field gathered to present their research. It was a great opportunity for individuals working in these fields to meet and discuss the current situation and future directions of the subject. The proceedings represent highlights of the type of astronomy research conducted in Algerian Universities and research centres. The conference was organised by the “Centre de Recherche en Astronomie Astrophysique et Geophysique” in Algiers (CRAAG). It is the second to be organised after the first held at the University of Batna a year earlier. The aim is to make it a yearly national meeting of the astronomical community, similar to the UK National Astronomy Meeting (NAM) organised by the Royal Astronomical Society or the American equivalent.
